Launched
on 17 October 1891 by Harland and Wolff, Belfast. She had two
3 cylinder steam engines which gave her a service speed of 11
knots. The twin engine layout proved very reliable but over-powered
for the extra increase in speed, thus more costly to operate.
In 1900 she was acquired by the Shipping Controller, as was her
sister Mahratta, and acted as HM Transport No 93 when shipping
troops to South Africa during the Boer War. |
